The side events programme, or activities organised outside the formal programme of the UIC Global Rail Freight, provides an excellent opportunity for delegates to discuss on the topic of rail freight.

The side events that we organise include:


Ten-T Days – Joint exhibition

The 5th UIC Global Rail Freight Conference will be joined with the TEN-T Days 2016 of the European Commission and the European Rail Freight Corridor. This event is organized by the Dutch Presidency of the European Union.

The GRFC will offer a natural continuation to the discussions on European corridors and multimodality and move to a global context where innovation and digitalization are at the heart of the success of rail freight.

GCU 10th Anniversary Dinner together with TEN-T Days at the ss Rotterdam

The 10th anniversary celebration of The General Contract of Use for Wagons will take place on Tuesday 21st of June on board of the ss Rotterdam ship. The GCU members will be entertained by a jazz trio. During the cocktail party our guests can enjoy an exclusive walking dinner on board.

The General Contract of Use for Wagons (GCU) is a multilateral contract based on the international convention COTIF 1999 and Annex CUV. The GCU specifies the mutual rights and obligations of Wagon Keepers (K) and Railway Undertakings (RU) with regard to the use of rail freight wagons as a means of transport throughout Europe and beyond.

Since its start in July 2006, the GCU has grown to an impressive network of more than 600 signatories across 20 countries, with more than 600,000 wagons currently declared in the GCU wagon database.

Technical visit to the Shunting Yard Kijfhoek

You are invited to visit the Shunting Yard Kijfhoek (located near the Port of Rotterdam). The Shunting Yard is the largest one in The Netherlands and also one of Europe’s busiest.

Kijfhoek is a hump yard type freight rail yard between Rotterdam and Dordrecht, in the West of The Netherlands.

During the visit you will be informed about the upcoming changes in the infrastructure with a presentation of the project leader.
A round trip by bus to the shunting yard is included.

Technical visit to ECT Terminal

We are offering a technical visit to the Europe Container Terminals (ECT). All our delegates are invited to participate and learn more about the connection with the port and the rail freight corridors.

Europe Container Terminals (ECT) is one of the leading and most advanced container terminal operators in Europe. The company handles a majority of the containers at the port of Rotterdam. In 2015, ECT handled 7.5 million TEU. ECT operates the ECT Delta Terminal and the Euromax Terminal Rotterdam. Both situated at the Maasvlakte, directly on the North Sea.
The ECT Delta Terminal was the first automated terminal in the world.

GRFC Gala Dinner and boat-tour through the Port of Rotterdam

All delegates and speakers are invited to attend the GRFC Gala Dinner, which will take place on Wednesday 22 June 2016 on the Pure Liner Ship.

The special architecture of the boat offers an environment where you as a guest will be greeted in an exceptionally prestigious way. During the gala dinner you can enjoy the various views of the harbor and city of Rotterdam.

Our guests will be entertained by a well-known DJ and a saxophonist.

You are invited to join us in this fine dining experience.

20.30 – 22.30: GRFC Gala Dinner Sponsored by BIC on the Pure Liner Ship, which will be sailing through the harbor of Rotterdam.

Live demo presentation: European information portal on last-mile infrastructure for rail freight

DG Move has taken the step to support the market with a web-based portal offering a user-friendly access to information on last-mile infrastructure for rail freight. The portal offers comprehensive results based on the chosen facility types (intermodal terminal, rail ports, stations with public/ private siding), as well as area types, rail freight corridors, loading units and cargo types.

Visit the UIC stand in Rotterdam for a live presentation and discussion with project managers.
